Research? Referencing?

Research and referencing.

What is it?

Why is it important?

These were the questions that we were asked today in class.

At first I thought to myself yeah this will be easy I know what these words are and have done for years now. But then when I had to try and explain them thats when the hard part came in. I mean I know what the words are, I just couldn't put it onto paper.

To begin we wrote on a sticky note what we thought was the definition and importance of each word and placed them on the board. This allowed all ideas to be up so that we could collaborate as a class to come up with the best definition that we thought suited each word.

My definitions...

Research:
The ability to find information using a number of different sources on a specific topic. The importance of research is to to find correct and relevant information on any topic.

Referencing:
To acknowledge others work that you have used when finding information. The importance of referencing is to ensure that no plagiarism has been committed.

Collaborated definitions...

Research:
Is the relevant and useful information that is collected from different sources. the gathered information is as much as you are able to find or as much as you need for the purpose. The importance of  research is to to answer any question that you have on a topic and to gain the knowledge on a topic. research allows you gain specific information on anything.

Referencing:
Is the acknowledgement as a citation of ideas and work from others form various sources to allow further explanation. The importance of referencing to ensure that plagiarism doesn't take place and work isn't calmed as your own, and gives credit to the original author of the work used.

This task that we completed allowed me to reinforce the idea that when you collaborate some ideas you are able to come up greater responses or answers, depending on the situation.

Reflection...

Ok so I have now been in the unit EDN113 for 4 weeks now and I thought it might be a good time to reflect on what I have learnt and accomplished within this unit for the short amount of time I have been in it for.

So within these 4 weeks I have realised that I am able to create and publish a website and blog along with creating instructions on how to set up and upload videos to YouTube and convert the file to PDF. This are some things that I didn't think that I would be able to do 4 weeks ago. I feel like I have accomplished many things in this unit so far and i only expect for more accomplishments to happen.

Don't get me wrong these things at some point have been hard for me to do and I got confused and stuck a number of times but as always I was able to get myself out of these sticky situations and moved on.

During the workshops of this unit I have found them quite useful and they are more hands on which is what I like about them. We are able to do surveys and work on a word document that everyone is typing on at the same time. It's a mazing!! We have also done a few example peer reviews I found these very useful as I could see where I could improve in my own website and social learner task to get the highest possible marks that I could. I realised that you didn't need to put heaps of information to get high marks you just need to address the marking key. Which I hope this is what I have done within my assignment.

Well that about it I have learnt a lot in these 4 weeks and hope to learn more as the semester goes on and we learn how to do more and more with technology! :)

3 Technologies...

Ok so I was finally able to decide on what technology to use for my social learner task. And the winner is YOUTUBE!!!

But before I was able to choose a winner I had to look at three different technologies to see which one I thought was better for my situation of uploading videos to the internet to share to the greater dance community.

The three technologies that I looked at for this task were Facebook, Google+ and YouTube. these technologies were all ones that were able to do the job that I needed them to do, but one did it better then the others. YouTube.

When I first looked at Google+ I had no idea what it was and how to use it and after some discovering and messing around on the site I realised that it was almost the same as Facebook you were able to have friends that you could communicate with, you could upload photos and videos for your friends too see and you could also video call your friends. This was a good site but I realised that the video would only be seen by the people that you are friends with in the site so I decided that this wasn't a good choice for this task and moved onto my next technology, Facebook.

Facebook is a technology that I understand and am use to using so it didn't take much exploring to discover what it could do. Facebook was much the same as Google+ with the added bonus of being able to share the videos so that more people that you are not friends with are able to watch. I thought that Facebook was going to be the technology that I was going to use but then I thought that the audience that I was targeting my not see the videos and if they didn't it would take them along time to view them. From this I decided to look at YouTube as I thought that videos on there are able to be viewed by the typing of key words.

Ok so the last technology that I looked at was YouTube. YouTube allowed me to post videos online for anyone to see and could be searched by specific words. I thought this would be perfect for my situation as it would allow my videos to be seen by people that want to look at specific videos and are looking for something in particular. To post videos to YouTube all that needed to be done was for me to sign up and make and account once i had done that I had to create my channel and start posting videos. I was quite surprised t how easy it was for me to do this. Knowing that I'm not very techsavey.

The event...

So as part of my first task for EDN113 I have to think of an event or situation and solve it using a technology of our choice.

Now this was really hard for me. To begin I couldn't think of an idea that I could fix using technology. My first idea that i had was to throw a party and us some form of technology to decide on what cake to make, but after I though and researched a bit i couldn't really find what technology to use for this situation. So then I though about it a bit more closer to heart and thought to myself what am I really passionate about then I thought DANCE! I mean what else I spend almost all of my time with some form of dance anyway.

So the next idea that came to me was how can I use technology to upload dance videos to the internet for the dance community to view. I thought that this would be a good situation to solve with technology as I already had an idea of the technologies that I could look at.

So there we go my situation was decided for my task and all I need to do now is look at the technologies and put them on my website. :)
